The community of Rancho Peñasquitos (PQ) is located west of Interstate 15, north of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, south of the community of Rancho Bernardo, and east of the Torrey Highlands Community. Interstate Route 56 traverses east-west through the central portion of the community. Rancho Peñasquitos encompasses approximately 6,500 acres including Black Mountain Regional Park. It is named after the first Mexican land grant in the county, Rancho Santa Maria de Los Peñasquitos. Peñasquitos means “little cliffs” in Spanish.

The community has a diverse topography that is characterized by numerous canyons, hillsides, and ridges. It abuts Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, an open space preserve that offers hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. The most prominent feature of the community is Black Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 1,500 feet.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve has a rich history dating back to 1823 when one league (4243 acres) of land was awarded to Captain Francisco Maria Ruiz, a Commandant of the San Diego residio. This one league was at the eastern part of the Canyon and extended into Sabre Springs and up to Rancho Bernardo. Ruiz spent many years in loyal service to Mexico, and this splendid canyon was his reward. Ruiz built a one-room adobe casa in 1824. You can see three of the remaining walls of his house in the main ranch house conference room.
In 1974 the county acquired Los Peñasquitos Ranch House and began its restoration. Volunteer organizations, like the San Diego County Archaeology Society and Friends of Peñasquitos work closely with City and County Rangers to preserve and protect the restored rancho and the beautiful canyon for hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts.
Black Mountain Open Space Park is owned and managed by the City of San Diego and is made up of a series of chaparral and sage covered hills, ridges, and canyons. The park is currently 2,352 acres, with expansion a future possibility.
It is located in the Rancho Peñasquitos area of northern San Diego, situated between Camino Del Sur to the west, Peñasquitos Drive to the east, Lusardi Creek to the north and Carmel Mountain Road to the south. The centerpiece of the park is the 1,554-foot summit of Black Mountain, which provides 360-degree views of the surrounding area.
Numerous trails offer hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians the opportunity to discover the wonder of this open space park. Black Mountain offers a variety of trails and dirt roads that travel through dense chaparral covered canyons, native grasslands, and riparian areas.Access to the summit is provided by a 2.5-mile hike or bike ride up a dirt road that is near Hilltop Community Park, located at 9711 Oviedo Way.
