    The beautiful coastal community of La Jolla is a resort area located in San Diego County along the Pacific Coast.     La Jolla is a fabulous place to visit and an even better place to call home. La Jolla received its name after “la joya”, the Spanish word for “jewel” and although this is thought only to be legend, the residents of La Jolla think the description is very apropos.

    Boasting one of the most pleasant climates in the world (averaging in the low 70s) and some of the most famous beaches, La Jolla has become Southern California’s riviera. Carved out of La Jolla’s sandstone cliffs by centuries of wave impact and designated a underwater nature preserve, La Jolla Cove offers excellent swimming, beachcombing, and scuba diving.

    La Jolla is also home to a variety of businesses including luxury hotels, gourmet and trending dining, and world class shopping.  The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is located in La Jolla, as are the Salk Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (part of UCSD), Scripps Research Institute, and the headquarters of National University.

    Education

    Education is a high priority in La Jolla with the University of California, San Diego being the highlight of the education system.  La Jolla has numerous award-winning public and prestigious private schools.

    Public Schools

    There are 3 public elementary schools in La Jolla: Bird Rock, La Jolla, and Torrey Pines. The boundaries are predominantly based on where you reside. All three schools are much loved by those who attend, and involvement in the PTA is huge.  Muirlands Middle School is a highly rated, public institution and has 1,090 students with about 22 students per teacher.  La Jolla High School is known for its sports teams and high academic ranking with 1600 students.

    Private & Niche Schools

    The private schools are a large draw in this city, whether its kindergartners diving into the world or high school students gearing up for higher education through college prep, SATs, AP classes and more. Some of these schools aren’t simply elementary or middle school; instead, they include multiple grades, which is ideal for people with children of various ages.

    The Bishop’s School: Middle School through High School (6th-12th)
    This elite, highly regarded school is an independent institution designed for college-prep education.  As an affiliate of the Episcopalian church, Bishop’s has been in La Jolla since 1909.

    La Jolla Country Day: Toddler/Pre-K – High School
    This top notch, 24-acre school is part of a nationwide private school system that even accepts international applicants for high school. It’s academics and extracurriculars are top of the line.

    The Children’s School: Toddler/Pre-K – 8th
    This progressive school is all about its students being 21st century learners, emphasizing outreach projects that go outside the classroom walls. This school believes strongly in academic, social, and environmental curriculum.

    Stella Maris Academy: K – 8th
    This school is associated with the Parochial School for Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic, and located right in the heart of La Jolla Village. It intertwines faith and tradition with positive growth and learning.

    The Evans School: K – 6th
    Located on Mt. Soledad, the Evans School is known for a focus on education that’s not only academically nurturing, but also emphasizes respect and kindness through faith-centered education.

    San Diego French American School: Pre-K through 8th grade
    This bi-lingual, multi-cultural school is a great place to foster language learning and development. It seeks to pick the best of both the French and American school systems to create a powerful learning environment.

    Montessori School of La Jolla: Pre-K & Kindergarten
    Montessori seeks to activate and stimulate all the senses to create a learning environment that’s inquiring and cooperative, where students are not simply taught. They grow through self and teacher-initiated activities, in a classroom with children of different ages, not simply their own.

    The Preuss School: College-Preparatory Charter School
    This is a high profile charter-school focused on sending kids to college who will be the first in their family to graduate from university. Located on the UCSD campus, it emphasizes a culture of higher education and learning.
